Symantec DLP product overview

Symantec Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solution delivers the protection needed to prevent data breaches and safeguard the company’s reputation. It gives comprehensive discovery, monitoring, and protection capabilities for total visibility and control over confidential data. It scans endpoints, network file shares, databases, and other data repositories for sensitive information.

Symantec DLP empowers organizations to discover where data lives across every channel, including cloud, email, web, endpoints, and storage. In addition, it monitors data usage on and off the corporate network and protects it from being exposed or stolen in real-time. The software also leverages content-aware detection technologies that make it possible to reduce false positives and false negatives. It minimizes the impact of DLP efforts on end-users and finds confidential information stored virtually in any location and file format.

Breakdown of core features

Endpoint security

Symantec’s endpoint security feature provides all the protection required to keep sensitive data safe and protected on endpoints. It brings complete discovery, monitoring, and protection capabilities for data in use across a broad range of channels, such as email, cloud apps, network protocols, external storage, virtual desktops, and servers.

Network monitor

The software’s Network Monitor allows users to capture and analyze outbound traffic on the corporate network. It also detects sensitive content and metadata over standard, non-standard, and proprietary protocols. Organizations deploy the feature on network egress points.

The Network monitor integrates with the network tap or Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN). It performs deep content inspection of all network communications with zero packet loss.

Sensitive image recognition

Symantec DLP detects text embedded in images such as scanned forms, documents, screenshots, pictures, and PDFs using its Sensitive Image Recognition. This feature utilizes Form Recognition technology and built-in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engine.

Vector machine learning

The solution protects intellectual property with nuanced characteristics that are rare or difficult to describe, like financial reports and source code. Unlike other detection technologies, Vector Machine Learning does not require users to locate, describe, or fingerprint the data they need to protect.
