Monday.com is an all-in-one work management tool that covers project management, collaboration, operational automation, and more. Lots of folks are picking it up, but maybe once you grab it you don’t know how to start digging in. Or maybe you’re looking to pick it up, but want to know what to expect when you do. In either case, this super basic how to video is for you. But before that, hey! I’m Kyle. And today, I’ll be showing you How to get started in Monday.com.
Oh and, quick note, you might see a lot of the footage has this lovely lady’s face on some of the buttons. As you can see, that is not me, or at least last time I checked… but actually I just got some help from my friend KJ who knows a whole heck of a lot more about Monday than me. Cool? Cool. Let’s proceed. So once you’re in Monday you’ll want to make a Workspace. Workspaces are the largest category of content in Monday and are intended to split things up between different teams.
For instance, your writers would probably work in a different workspace than sales, or your marketing team might work in a different workspace than your ridiculously attractive and charming video team. *ahem* For example. Once you have a workspace, you’ll see we’ve called this one ‘test workspace,’ you’ve got a handful of options of things you can add, all from the aptly named “add” dropdown. If you click on it, you’ll see the first option is a board.
Boards are the bread and butter of Monday.com. You’ll likely be doing most of your work within them, and they can be customized thoroughly to meet your team’s needs. From our first set of options you can choose the privacy settings. Main means it’ll be viewable to anyone with your company’s account, this’ll likely be what you’ll be using mostly. Private is only visible to those that you explicitly invite and is intended for more sensitive information, and shareable means it’s visible to anyone that the link is shared with.
Below that you’ll see it asks what you’ll be managing on the board, and this’ll help to populate how the board is set up with different groups and columns and all that. For this example, we’ll just keep it on ‘items’ and hit ‘Create Board.’ We’ll dig in more on what you can do from this board screen in future videos, but already you can see that you can name each of these items by clicking on them, you can create new groups or new items, if you click on the little plus icon to the right you’ll be able to add new columns by either making it from scratch or choosing from a huge selection of the most common options.
The order of items is really easy to move around too, you can click and drag an item to reorder them within a group, you can swap it out to another group, or even reorder entire groups themselves. Going back over to the workspace, if we go back to the add button we’ll see we can create a doc, which is the equivalent of a Microsoft Word or Google Doc, but it lives completely on Monday.com and is accessible to the folks in your workspace by default (though you can also set this to private or shareable as needed).
Below the doc option, you can also create a dashboard. Dashboards pull in information from one or more of your boards in order to display a customizable, visual representation of your data. You’ll first need to choose which board or boards will be associated with the dashboard, then create widgets so you can show the data you want to show in the way you want to show it. There’s a lot to cover with dashboards, so we’ll dig into that further in another video.
And the last item I’ll show you from the “add” dropdown is a form. Forms work similarly to google forms in that they are customizable forms where you can set what kind of data you need like text, dates, numbers, attachments, or whatever else. With monday.com, once these forms are submitted they’ll automatically feed into your boards. So for instance, if you made a request form for the production of a new item, when that form is submitted it would automatically go into a corresponding board as an item for that team to work on AND a notification will be sent out so it’s ready and primed to get worked on.
And that wraps up our video on how to get started with monday.com. If that was helpful, I’d really appreciate it if you hit that like and subscribe button down below.
