HackerRank describes itself as ‘the industry standard for technical hiring.’ HackerRank helps users to plan specifically what skills are necessary for each technical role and tailor their assessments to match.
HackerRank also includes features to source and screen resources to ensure they have the right skill set for the job. Finally, HackerRank allows users to interview candidates within an integrated development environment, or IDE, to see how candidates code in real time. HackerRank has four plans with increasing prices and features, with options to bill annually or monthly. The most basic plan, Interview, includes 1 interviewer license and access to interviews and the standard content library.
This scales up all the way to the Enterprise Platform plan which also includes tests, projects, benchmarking, reviews, ATS integration, and a customer success manager. HackerRank has no free plan but does include a free trial. HackerRank is available on modern browsers. Due to its focus on coding, which is best performed on a desktop or laptop setup, there is currently no mobile app for HackerRank. HackerRank includes features catered towards each step of the technical recruiting process.
The highlight of HackerRank’s features is the Remote First Interview. Using the previously mentioned IDE, users can interview candidates while both parties are looking and working from the same system. A suite of features fleshes the interviewing process out to include audio or video chat, over 40 coding languages, screen import, and proctoring controls to let users know when candidates leave the tab. Once the interview is complete, users can review candidate scores and compare them to averages across the entirety of the HackerRank community.
HackerRank includes a Skills Directory that details over 95 technical skills, helping users to build out a plan for the exact type of candidate they need for each particular role, ranging from software engineers to front-end developers and more. HackerRank also helps users build out customized workflows that can be fine-tuned for each company with different tests, interviews, and branded invitations. HackerRank has sourcing events like virtual career fairs, hosting a hub of diverse and qualified candidates to pick through.
HackerRank’s candidate pool details information beyond basics, like where they got their degree, and includes notes such as specific skill sets and interest in users’ companies. Once suitable candidates have been sourced, HackerRank includes custom tests in the IDE to screen potential recruits with real-world skills including building a web app, fetching API data, or debugging a codebase. HackerRank is a highly rated software with several notable pros and cons.
Users appreciate the challenges that are available for different skills and different programming languages. Also, the ranking system helps to easily see where candidates stack up against similar candidates. However, some users reported issues with code not compiling correctly, and others dislike the inability to give suggestions or revisions for coding assessments. It’s best practice to look at a few options before investing in a software system.
