If you’re a CEO or CTO of a company, you may be looking for a platform that would allow your team to work together on different projects. Tools like simultaneous document editing, video conferencing, email and chat archiving, and personal storage are sought after features in a platform. Microsoft’s Sharepoint was the first to deliver these features and packaged them into a single platform. Until cloud services became prevalent, Sharepoints was the head runner in Team Collaboration Software.
Sharepoint has many features. Some of which include user dashboards, document management and editing, and web publishing tools With many features comes complexity, which has lead to struggles with user adoption and comfort. Other common complaints for Sharepoint include maintenance and upkeep cost along with concerns over IT resource consumption. But, you aren’t here to learn about sharepoint, you're here to learn more about the alternatives. We have come up with several options that TechnologyAdvice believes will serve as a great alternative to the Sharepoint platform.
First on that list is Google For work. If you're familiar with the Google Suite of productivity apps, Google for work will be easy to adopt. It takes these apps and optimizes them for business under your company domain. Google for work can be accessed from any location and any device. It’s administrative controls let you easily manage users, file security, data archival, and a range of other functions Google for work includes features like Email and chat archiving, drive files search, built in calendars and scheduling, video conferencing, simultaneous document editing, intranet sites, and survey or form creation.
Next on our list we have Huddle. Huddle is the self-described #1 sharepoint alternative. Their platform is geared toward large enterprises and government agencies. Huddle helps businesses share files, collaborate on projects and organize work flows. Users can edit files directly within the application and enjoy complete version control similar to what you would see in Google Docs. Huddle works through mobile and desktop apps and offers native integrations with salesforce, zimbra, centrify and ironically, Microsoft Sharepoint.
Huddle includes features like intelligent content dashboard, Customized cloud workspaces, social collaboration, FedRAMP, FISMA, IL3 compliance, task management, and intelligence sharing. It would be good to note that even though Huddle self-describes themselves as the number 1 alternative to sharepoint, their cost per user is higher. Third on our list is Box for Business Box is well known for its cloud storage service, but to a business it’s a powerful collaboration platform.
Box allows for file sharing, mobile synchronization, version control, project management, and more. An IT administrator can set up retention policies to retain certain files for HIPAA compliance, custom access controls, and security measures. Box has features like Custom Branding, Mobile Security Controls (including MDM Integration), Project and task management, password-protected share links, Access to stats and reporting, and compliance with HIPAA/HITECH, SEC 17a-4 (FINRA), and PCI DSS.
A final thing to note about box is that it integrates with Office 365 and various other Third-party apps for document editing. It does not have a native document editing capability. If you don’t need the robust features of an intranet platform like Sharepoint, a cloud storage service would be right up your alley with a much cheaper price tag. If that’s the case, there are plenty of cloud storage solutions on the market which offer enterprise level encryption and access control for business accounts.
