VIDEO: Badgeville Gamification Demo

Transcription

Welcome. Today we'll be looking at Samsung Nation, a large-scale gamification effort by Samsung that's run through gamification company Badgeville. This video is brought to you by Technology Advice and the Smart Advisor Tool, which lets you compare over 90 gamification companies in under two minutes. This video is part of our gamification case study series where we walk you through real life examples of gamification platforms. Samsung Nation is an online community, you might call it, which is designed to encourage visitors to Samsung.com, to interact with their content on a deeper level, post reviews, answer other users questions, and share Samsung's content over social media.

As I said before, it's run through Badgeville's gamification platform. Badgeville is one of the leading names in gamification right now. certainly one of the most well-known, so you might enjoy seeing their product in action. We've got the site up over here, and it features a point system, badges, levels, and leaderboards. There's also a monthly contest where users have to earn a certain badge in order to be entered into it. Clearly, however, Samsung is hoping that once users join Samsung Nation, maybe to enter that contest, they'll keep trying to earn badges and will be encouraged to post reviews or like their products on Facebook.

You can join the program by logging in through pretty much any of the big social networks, Facebook, Twitter, etc., or providing your email and name. This is the account screen that we're on now where we've made a test account. You can see the leaderboard right here which shows the top daily players or we can change that to weekly or monthly or all time. There's also this my rewards tab and if we click that we'll see all of the information about us. has our name, a photo if we'd like to upload one or if we signed in through Facebook, it'll take it from there, the level that we're at, novice, how many points we have, a little bar showing our progress to the next level, and our recent achievements.

You can see that it also says we have five rewards. I think the usage of the term rewards here might be a little confusing for a few people because there aren't any real rewards as you normally think of them. These aren't discounts, gift cards, or anything like that. By rewards, Samsung actually just means the levels or badges that you've earned. So, you can see our recent achievements, and each of these counts as a reward, and so does the distinction of novice.

You can see the badges are things like the quest badge which means we've spent a certain amount of time on the site, the cruise badge, which is for the same thing, and the best reviewed badge, which we'll touch on in a minute. Finally, you'll notice the activities box that's been continually updating this whole time. This is a live feed of the current activity taking place on Samsung Nation. You can see people as they sign up uh earn the novice level or higher levels and earn things like merit badges or this letter G badge.

Hovering over them will give you a brief description. And as you can see, there is a lot of activity. It's mostly people unlocking the basic levels, but there's a pretty constant stream. If we scroll down, we can see our showcase um and the missions that we've completed. The missions are just another level of gamification um that's there to provide incentive. They're sort of collections of different badges, and if you earn all of those badges, you'll unlock that mission, and that'll count as another reward.

There's also a small settings tab that lets us change our picture and the notifications and sharing options. Finally, you'll see this month's promotion. To enter, you just have to click the link here, and that will take us to the best reviewed products page on samsung.com. For going to that page, we'll get that best reviewed badge that you saw earlier. It's a pretty simple process really and it's designed to actually lead you out of this Samsung Nation page and back into samsung.com and their products which of course is the point of this entire community.

And it is the only tangible reward in the system. The points and badges you saw can't be redeemed for discounts or special services or anything like that. They're solely a competition just to see who has interacted with the most content. And that's pretty much Samsung Nation. So if you are curious about what a Badgeville gamification solution can look like, this is a great example. Samsung calls the program a community, although there's really not much interaction with the other players that we could find.
