Graylog makes handling data securely its business, focusing on the process of collecting, enhancing, and storing logs. A centralized management or CLM platform, Graylog also prides itself on being able to allow companies to then access that data in a simplified fashion for later use. If you’re in the market for a Security Information and Event Management tool, you’ll want to consider Graylog. But if you’re just starting your search, we can help. With point and click visualizations, search templates, and intuitive alerts and functionality, Graylog Security is ready to help you search for Cyber Threats to your organization in addition to keeping secure logs of all interactions within the network. From the main dashboard of Graylog, the search function will allow you to run queries on a variety of potential security issues.

For instance, you could search for a program on the system. Narrow that down to a file being accessed by that program, then create a saved search on your “Dashboard” that will allow you to capture details relating to file access. Graylog’s alert features are there to let you review potential network issues that may have occurred within your organization’s network. The alert overview will allow you to review any alerts that have been set up by you or your system administrator.

Clicking through will show you any trigger notifications that may have happened before the alert was issued. LDAP or lightweight directory access protocol is built into Graylog’s software. LDAP can perform individual group and user synchronization. Active Directory groups can be synched with your network’s teams and individual users will also be carried over. If Graylog sounds a bit complicated then you may be on to something. A few users have mentioned that if you’d like to alter the setup then it could be tricky and have asked for more documentation relating to it and that it does have a steep learning curve.

However, none have mentioned that they didn’t ultimately like the software. Graylog Enterprise has extended support for archives, audit logs for compliance, licenses, reports, customizations, forwarders, and also Illuminate: a feature that allows for data log categorization and normalization. However, some users have mentioned that they would like to see more visual reporting capabilities from the software. For pricing information and a 30-minute demo session directed by a Graylog team member, you’ll have to contact Graylog directly.

However, it should be noted that Graylog does have free versions for use with relatively few limitations. It’s good to get multiple quotes before choosing a Security Information and Event Management solution. If you’re interested in Graylog, you might also want to consider EventSentry, LogDNA, LogPoint, and Splunk Enterprise. Still not sure if Graylog is right for you?
