About Smart Service

In business now for 18 years, My Service Depot began when its owner and president, Skip Stringfield, created software designed to help run the lawn care company he was working for at that time. Today, operating out of Lewis Center, Ohio, the company specializes in the development of QuickBooks compatible scheduling software for service industries. This includes everything from landscaping software, home inspection software and dispatching software to applications tailored for use by event planners and tutoring services.

Smart Service is My Service Depot’s flagship product. It allows office staff to avoid double data entry by adding scheduling to QuickBooks. When scheduling data is entered into the Smart Service program, it causes an automatic update to the applicable customer entry in the integrated QuickBooks software. This saves time for office personnel. For field service software, My Service Depot offers iFleet. This product, compatible with iPhone or iPad and with Windows laptops, allows for issuing work orders directly to field personnel who can then respond with updates on their jobs. Also, storage of this information creates archived job histories that are available for reference and analysis.

Empire Pools of Long Island, New York, implemented Smart Service because its client base for installations, maintenance and contracts increased to a point that management of client information had become unwieldy. The company has since streamlined its service routes, saved money on fuel as a result and increased its operating efficiency so that it can spend more time working with its customers.

What do you like best about this product?

The product seemed good in theory but turned out not to be a good fit.

What could be improved about this product?

It was not explained to us that the quickbooks tie in would only work in one direction. The return policy, which is very restrictive, was not explained prior to purchasing. Smart Service should have been more upfront about this!

What was your main concern about buying this software?

It has a very large upfront cost and has an ongoing expense to get help and updates to the program. iFleet does’t work without paying for the annual support package. We decided after 10 days that the program wasn’t for us and were surprised to discover that most of the cost of the program was not refundable. The only place I could find the return policy is buried deep in the user agreement. I think they should have been more upfront about that!

What business problems are you solving? What benefits have you seen?

Customer management by employees in the field. We were not confident after using it ourselves that the program would deliver the intended benefits.
